Guest Blogger: Daniel Altenau Speaking About Project Common Bond

Tuesday’s Children is very excited to be partnering with Alex and Ani at Project COMMON BOND 2013. For those of you not familiar, Project Common Bond (PCB) brings together youth, ages 15 to 20 years old, from around the world who share the “common bond” of losing a family member due to an act of terrorism or war.

During this eight-day symposium, youth participate in community-building activities and moderated dialogue sessions that acknowledge and respect their differences, while promoting friendship and understanding. Below is a little bit of what a past participant had to say about the experience:

“Project Common Bond is an experience that I carry with me all of the time. It is proof to the world that individuals from all different backgrounds have a common goal. It doesn’t matter which languages you speak or which religions you follow, all of these things come second to respect.

Despite the losses and hardships in our lives, I can honestly say I have never met a group of more compassionate and truly happy people that came together as a result of all of the anger and hatred in the world. I am very proud to be a part of PCB and I know I have a unique family full of permanent friendships.” — Jessica, 2012 American Participant

Project COMMON BOND first partnered with Alex and Ani’s Charity By Design team last year when we launched the My Love is Alive Bangle, which donates 20% of proceeds to the program. Vice President of Charity by Design, Nicki Castonguay-Maher, took great interest in Project COMMON BOND and met with the Tuesday’s Children team throughout the year to try and find a way for the whole Alex and Ani team to continue to contribute to Project COMMON BOND 2013.

Throughout our meetings we have been amazed by Alex and Ani’s dedication and moved by how much they want to help. We are excited to be working with them and so appreciative of the positive energy they bring to everything that they are a part of. Alex and Ani’s core mission is completely aligned with what we are trying to accomplish at Project COMMON BOND.

Alex and Ani will bring a huge team to this year’s Project COMMON BOND, including members of the Charity By Design team, Alex and Ani University, Alex and Ani’s entertainment division (featuring band Colour of London) and staff members from their friends at Peace Love Studios. Participants will enjoy interactive activities that center around the creative and expressive arts.

Colour of London’s Jimmie Allen and Nate Woodall will be working with participants to create a song specific to the Project COMMON BOND group. Kenneth Chabert of Alex and Ani University will explain how the Path of Life symbol can provide deep personal insights in understanding your self-identity as your life story unfolds. Finally, Peace Love Studios will work with all participants during a workshop they are calling “Walk in My Footprints” and “Walk in My Shoes” where they will be using donated shoes as part of a therapeutic art project.

We cannot express how excited we are to be working with the entire Alex and Ani and Peace Love Studios team. Thank you for being such a wonderful partner to Tuesday’s Children!
