Guest Blogger: Mike Erwin, Founder and Chairman of the Board at Team Red, White & Blue, on Helping Veterans Reconnect to their Communities

Each year, many Americans bravely enlist in the Armed Forces to protect our country. However, the return to civilian life afterward can be both difficult and stressful. Team Red, White & Blue (Team RWB) aims to help veterans reconnect to their communities in a positive way.

In honor of the launch of the ALEX AND ANI | CHARITY BY DESIGN® Kindred Cord #1Dad bracelet supporting Team RWB, we’re honored to welcome Mike Erwin, Founder and Chairman of the Board, as a guest blogger. Below he discusses the plight of millions of veterans and how we can work together to make a difference.

_____

Somewhere in America, a veteran is coming home after years of service. They are taking off their uniform, placing it in a duffel bag and starting over. They are settling in and returning to life, but if they are like the majority of America’s Veterans, they are not likely returning home to the same place they grew up in. The military does an exceptional job at turning citizen to soldier, but who is responsible for turning soldiers back to citizens? That very veteran, somewhere in America, joins the already 2.5 million who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan since 2001, and another 1 million who will separate from service within the next five years. Fortunately, for these men and women, while they leave their uniform behind, they carry on with their team at home: Team Red, White and Blue (Team RWB).

Team RWB’s mission is to enrich the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity. We employ a straightforward but effective model to achieve our vision. Physical fitness and sports are proven ways to bring people together and set the conditions to build meaningful relationships. At Team RWB, we provide veterans with renewed camaraderie, a sense of purpose, and shared accomplishment. In addition to being an excellent way to connect on a social level, physical activity is proven to be therapeutic and healthy for both the body and mind. In communities across America, Team RWB sets a foundation for successful veteran reintegration by breaking down the civilian-military divide and encouraging veterans to take control of their health and wellness. These chapters enrich veteran’s lives everyday and facilitate over 4,800 quality veteran interactions each week.
