Guest Blogger: Billy Turrell, Alex and Ani Transitional Operations Manager, on Being Nominated for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s 2014 ‘Man of the Year’

At Alex and Ani, giving back is an important part of what we do. Our Charity by Design division is committed to making a difference through multiple avenues, such as volunteerism and exclusive charm designs to benefit charitable organizations.

It’s wonderful to see our employees go above and beyond to touch the lives of others everywhere. Billy Turrell from our Transitional Operations department is currently in the running for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society‘s (LLS) “Man of the Year” award. This fundraising competition revolves around raising money for LLS to fund research, resources, and support services for patients and their families. Also, we are thrilled to have them as a partner for which we have the Lighthouse Charm Bangle, a beacon of comfort and resilience.

Read on to learn more about what LLS means to Billy and how you can help him help others through his fundraising journey.

What is your role at Alex and Ani?

I am a Transitional Operations Manager. My job is to manage all commercial expansion, such as our offices, warehouses, and showrooms.

What is your connection to LLS?

I got involved in LLS February 2013 as a member of Brian Trahan’s Man of the Year Campaign. Brian had asked me if I’d like to get involved by raising funds for the campaign and participating in events. I said, “Why not?! It’s for a good cause.” Unexpected of us, Brian won Man of the Year, by raising just over $16,000 dollars in 10 weeks. Shortly after the grand finale, I was approached by the Man & Woman of the Year (MWOY) committee and was asked if I would like to run next year. Once again I said, “Why not?!”

What is Man & Woman of the Year?

Man & Woman of the Year is a fundraising competition in communities across the United States in which participants vie for the title of Man or Woman of the Year. They raise funds for blood cancer research in honor of local children who are blood cancer survivors, the Boy & Girl of the Year – because everyone wins when cancer loses.

What does LLS mean to you?

Until recently, I have been unaware of  how many close friends and coworkers have been directly affected by this life shattering disease and what once was an effort to help others regardless of any ties, now hits home. With that I pledge to do my very best to raise funds and awareness for this important cause. Every dollar makes a tremendous difference in the lives of patients and families.

What is your fundraising goal?

I have set a goal to raise $25,000. In 10 weeks time that feels like a million, but I believe it is achievible. I have a great campaign manager, who is also a fellow friend and coworker along with a whole team of members that are doing absolutely amazing work organizing events and collecting donations. It’s an awesome feeling having such a great support group!

Where can people donate?
