Beauty Tips: Stain Removal

Welcome back for another beauty tip with our Director of Beauty, Joseph Allaire. While this one has us exploring the other side of beauty, a.k.a. the repercussions of beauty, it is a great one for everyone.

Recently one of our Directors here at Alex and Ani came to Joe with her brand new leather handbag, which had a large oil stain on the bottom. All she could say was, “Joe, please help me!” The stain was at least seven inches in diameter and had seeped visibly to the outside of the bag.

Alex and Ani Founder and Creative Director Carolyn Rafaelian creatively suggested that this may be the perfect time for her to dye the bag a different color. Joe agreed, but not without trying something first: That’s when he remembered a very simple solution that he learned in one of his chemistry classes … and it worked!

Crisis diverted, a few weeks later, Joe found one of our fabulous receptionists in the kitchen cleaning off oil that she spilled on her leather boot and jumped at the opportunity to share his tip.

What’s the secret, you ask? It’s very simple and you can find in right in your kitchen: cornstarch! Apply some to the oil stain and allow it to sit overnight. The next day, thoroughly brush it off, apply a fresh layer, and repeat the process until the stain disappears. Cornstarch acts to absorb the oil out of the leather — or any other material for that matter — to the point where you can barely see evidence of the stain!
